About

IL VENTO (The Wind) is a new ecological adaptation inspired by Shakespeare’s The Tempest, commissioned for presentation at the 2026 World Shakespeare Congress in Verona, Italy, in partnership with the International Shakespeare Association and the Conservatorio di Verona.

The work reimagines Shakespeare’s late play for an age shaped by climate crisis, ecological collapse, artificial intelligence and corporate power. Blending theatre, live music and soundscape, IL VENTO explores extraction and resistance through a haunting contemporary lens in which the wind emerges a living agent within the performance.

Set within the shadow of Prospero Enterprises, the production draws together textual echoes from across Shakespeare’s canon to create a fragmented and elemental theatrical world shaped by environmental instability. Combining original Shakespearean practices and a new live and recorded score, the work continues Shakespeare South’s commitment to site-responsive and environmentally conscious performance-making.

The production will premiere internationally in Verona, Italy, in July 2026.
